The Greatest Fighting Game of All Time

Most people will remember Super Smash Brothers Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube from their childhoods. The game came out in 2001 and while many have forgotten about it or play more recent versions of the franchise (Smash 4, Brawl), Melee has only been growing in size and competition.  I’ve been playing for a few years, and I just wanted to share the scene with you guys.

This 15 year old game has been called the greatest fighting game of all time.  A few years ago, a documentary was released which caused an influx of new players, and since then the scene has only been getting bigger.  They discuss the history of the game and why it is still considered so great.  If you’re interested, click here to check it out.

I know competitive gaming is a specific niche and of course you wouldn’t be interested unless you actually playthe game.  Here’s a video which talks about competitive gaming as a spectator, and touches specifically on why Melee can be so interesting.  Things of Beauty

I’m not a big competitor myself, but there is more to the appeal than competition.  Because the game has no online features, in order to play you have to find someone to sit down with, and I’ve made some really good friends through this game over the years.  Not only that, as a spectator there is tons of great content, and although I might not ever be one of the best competitors I enjoy watching the successes and upsets.  Here’s a great example of exciting times in Smash history which was discussed in the video Things of Beauty, Amsa Vs Mew2king.

The Big House is one of many popular tournament series.  It is hosted in Michigan that draws all the best players from all over the world.  This video is part of a series made to shed light on some of the background stories, players and events in Smash.  The Big House

Mango is one of the best players and one of my favourites.  Listen to him talk about the game hereor check out this combo video if you want to see more Melee.

Like I said before, I know competitive gaming is not generally interesting unless you play the game.  That being said, if any of this was actually interesting please share what it was you thought was cool.  Thanks for reading!
