ARTFUL NEIGHBOUR IN ISTANBUL “ YELDEGIRMENI”

I can say “old but gold” for Yeldeğirmeni in Istanbul. Its story is going back many years. You can smell the heritage while walking here.

Yeldeğirmeni is a neighbour in Kadıköy at Istanbul. I really like the texture of Kadıköy because it feels like the most liberal and sophisticated part of Istanbul.

To me, if you intend to get to know the district of Yeldeğirmeni, you have to walk a lot rather than eating in some restaurant, making breakfast or sitting a third wave coffee shop. Otherwise, it’s impossible to see street artworks or having an idea about the history of the neighbour as well.  Also, because there are many antique shops in the region, if you are interested, you can also tamper with them.

There is a street art festival, called “Mural Istanbul Fest”, hosted by Kadıköy and for this event, many artists meet in Istanbul to make graffitis and art on the Kadıköy’s walls. It’s an amazing event for reflecting Istanbul’s cosmopolite structure I think because many artists across from the world meet here and express themselves.

If you visit the event, you can catch the artists while they are painting. As an art lover, this event is so precious, because we are not able to see that much, art and street is mixing together every time, in the year and I know that if you tear apart the art from the street, it will harm to form and perception of art.

Yeldeğirmeni/Kadıköy is a beautiful and artful place in Istanbul, whether you visit at event date or not…

  2. Good topic for me, because Istanbul is not just a city for me. Especially the Asian side of Istanbul. I lived there for many years. I miss everything that belongs to Istanbul. Thank you for choosing and sharing this topic.

  3. I love the darker tones in your photo's. Art is as much about the process as it is the final piece, respect your highlighting it!

  4. I went to Turkey in 2015 with my family and visited Istanbul and Antalya. It was truly an amazing experience visiting the Blue Mosque and other places as well. I really liked your pictures as well, they really added to the blog in many ways.
