And Now For Something Completely Different…
Mandy is the most memorable film of 2018, and in a year that saw the release of Hereditary and Terrifier, that’s saying a lot. However, unlike those other films I mentioned, Mandy leans neither too hard on psychological terror, or “there’s no way he’s gonna do what I think he’s gonna-ok yes he is doing that,” gore. It instead walks the perfect line between art film and over the top horror flick.
The Story Thus Far
Set in a stylized psychedelic multiverse of 1983, the film follows Red Miller on his quest to avenge his girlfriend Mandy Bloom, who was burned alive by sadistic cult leader Jeremiah Sands. However, to get to Jeremiah and the rest of the Children of the New Dawn, Red will have to get through the Black Skulls, a group of leather clad, LSD guzzling demonic bikers. What follows is a surreal story filled with booze, drugs and a chainsaw duel. Yes. A chainsaw duel.
Persons of Interest
The execution of Mandy is really want cements its legacy. Director and co-writer Panos Cosmatos brings his unique vision to the film, conjuring vivid landscapes of red and blue light that leaves every scene oozing style. Composer Johann Johansson compliments Cosmatos’ visual storytelling with a soaring synthesizer score. These mad scientists concoct the back drop for Nicolas Cage’s performance of Red, our protagonist. This is the kind of film where Cage can really flaunt his full acting range, from Oscar winner to meme. Is he crazier than Con Air? More poignant than Leaving Las Vegas? I think this role stands out in its own right.
Just Go See It
In short, go see this movie. Love it or hate it, it’s all you’ll be talking about for a while.

I just saw this last month and I loved it! I was quite impressed with the overall production and Nic Cage is back to his crazy characters. I love how campy this film was and all the homages it pays to the 80s, especially the synth music. Thanks for the write-up, Jack!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Beyond the Black Rainbow?
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, this movie is great.
A good horror movie can be hard to find - the genre is tricky. I love Nicholas Cage (don't talk to me if you haven't seen The Weather Man). Looking forward to this
