Homesickness is a hell of a thing!

When can I go home???
“When you feel homesick,’ he said, ‘just look up. Because the moon is the same where you go.” – The Goldfinchby Donna Tartt

Home sicknessis a hell of a thing. In this blog, I’m going to write a few guidelines on how I am coping with home sickness while being 4,000 km from my little island, Trinidad.

vTalk to your family daily- This is my number one. My mom is my go-to for absolutely everything. Whatever issues I’m having here, I call her back home and she is ready to lend a helping hand no matter what. Keep in contact with your family and it won’t feel like they are that far. FaceTimeis my best friend!
vKeep a piece of home with you but still let go- This sounds a bit silly, but I think it is important to never let go of your home. Whether it be a cultural aspect or a mentality, keep that, but still allow yourself to integrate into a new society. Allow yourself to have both, it makes you more diverse and different.
vRemind yourself how lucky you are- Whatever it is that takes you away from home is a learning experience. Constantly remind yourself that you are fortunate enough to be where you are, at school, like me or somewhere else and that you have a home worth missing.
I will add more tips along the way as I continue to cope with my home sickness. Comment any tips you may want to add.

  2. I can also relate to this! I was born in London, England but moved to Canada in 2005, when I was 4. I haven't been back in 7+ years, and I get more and more homesick as time goes on, so your blog post reminded me that I have a home worth missing.

  3. Some great tips Emma! I couldn't imagine what you're going through, I hope someone going through the same thing can relate and see some light at the end of the tunnel!

  4. These are great tips, Emma. When I first moved away from my hometown Cornwall (only 5 hours away east of here) four years ago, I was homesick like crazy. My mom was very persistent that I talked to her every day and as annoyed as I was with it, I think it definitely helped. Having a piece of home but also letting go can be hard but it is important, especially when adapting to a new city and place of residence. As time goes on, you get used to being on your own and the homesickness starts to fade but it never goes away. And that's okay!

  5. Hey, I have The Goldfinch. I've just never read it.

I hope you're able to visit Trinidad again soon - and I hope that you feel welcome and happy in Toronto. Have you shared pictures of the garbage weather here with your mom?

  8. This is really great advice because I plan to do a semester abroad in Denmark. Because I live with my parents now, this advice is really going to help me when or if I go there.
