Book Blog Review - October Edition

Book Blog Review – October Edition
For my monthly book review this October, I decided to read House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I wanted a book that:
  • Was actually scary
  • Had a compelling story-line
  • Was creative
  • Was unlike any of the other horror genre books I’ve read

All of this was promised by co-workers and fellow book bloggers, so I decided to give the 709-page paperback a shot.

(an excerpt from the end of the book)

Synopsis:
This part gets a little tricky since the story is about a man’s notes about a documentary film (a film that doesn’t actually exist) with the added thoughts of the man who found and compiled the notes and slowly becomes insane. There are multiple main characters with intercepting story-lines and moments where you’re not sure if the terror is real or just in the main character’s mind. Indigo doesn’t leave much of an informative review either.

My Thoughts:
House of Leaves is a very complex read and sometimes very confusing. This book contains a lot of visual elements and is extremely entertaining to look through. Sometimes pages will be filled with footnotes, illustrations, repeated words and sometimes nothing. As my co-workers promised, there was some genuinely horrific moments as well as times where a certain event stayed with me into the night.

What others think:
With a 4.1 star out of 5 rating on Goodreads and on Amazon, House of Leaves is generally considered a complex, creative, thought-provoking and thrilling read! Many have analyzed the book and their theories can be found on all sorts of blogs. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the horror genre and anyone up for a mind-bending read.

  1. This sounds intriguing... you have a great writing style. I don't typically read these types of books, but I am willing to give it a try.

  2. As a filmmaker I enjoy things that are out of the ordinary. I'll definitely be giving this book a try, it looks like a trip a regular writing style won't take you on.

  4. This sounds really interesting. I really enjoy "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson. Its more of a thriller but still a great read.
